IV. ENROLLMENT

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”

— Plato, Republic 377a

I. The Lyceum Academic Evaluation

Diagnostic · Analytical · Foundational

All new students begin with a Lyceum Academic Evaluation.

This is not a placement test. It is a structured academic analysis designed to reveal how a student thinks — not merely what they have been taught. Before a single lesson is planned, we take the time to understand a student's reasoning habits, conceptual strengths, and areas of genuine need.

The Evaluation assesses:

  • Conceptual understanding

  • Procedural fluency

  • Mathematical reasoning and written communication

  • Problem-solving habits and intellectual endurance

  • Standardized test readiness (where applicable)

Following the session, families receive a written Academic Evaluation Summary — including a domain-by-domain analysis, a structural performance profile, and a clear set of instructional recommendations. We then meet to discuss findings, answer questions, and determine the right program pathway together.

The Evaluation is a 75–90 minute individual session, followed by a written analysis and a family consultation.

Evaluation fee: $325. The fee is waived for families referred by a current or former Lyceum family. In certain cases, enrollment may be offered directly to students whose academic history clearly reflects alignment with The Lyceum's standards.

II. The Enrollment Process

Enrollment at The Lyceum proceeds in five stages.

1. Diagnostic Examination. A 75–90 minute multi-domain assessment combining computational, conceptual, and applied reasoning. Students are not expected to complete every problem — the Evaluation is designed to reveal how they think, not how much they have memorized.

2. Instructor Review & Analysis. Each response is evaluated not only for correctness, but for method, structure, and mathematical communication. We are as interested in how a student approaches a problem as in whether they solve it.

3. Academic Evaluation Summary. Families receive a structured written report including quantitative results, qualitative analysis, and instructional recommendations.

4. Family Consultation. We discuss findings, clarify goals, and align expectations. This is also an opportunity to learn more about the student as an individual — their interests, their history with the subject, and what they are hoping to build. This conversation is as important as the assessment itself.

5. Placement & Instructional Plan. Placement is determined by demonstrated readiness, reasoning capacity, and long-term trajectory — not by age or grade level alone. We aim not for short-term acceleration, but for durable mathematical strength.

The aim is not classification. It is direction.

A Note on Enrollment

The Lyceum maintains limited enrollment in order to preserve the quality and integrity of each student's experience. We do not take on more students than we can serve well.

Families who complete the Academic Evaluation and are offered a place in a program will receive a formal Enrollment Agreement outlining the structure, expectations, and policies of The Lyceum. Enrollment reflects an ongoing commitment — to the student, to the program, and to the process of intellectual development.

We look forward to meeting you.
