THE LYCEUM

Where Mathematical Thinking Takes Root

Whether your child dreads mathematics or devours it, you’ll be amazed to see how far they can grow . . .

I. THE LYCEUM PROCESS

Most instruction teaches students to use mathematics. The Lyceum teaches students to understand it.

Every student begins with an evaluation that shows us not only what they know, but how they think. From there, each lesson is written for the student in front of us: what they know, how they learn, and what they already love. One student's imaginary ice cream shop served as the setting for a module on measurement. Another's fantasy basketball lineup became an introduction to permutations.

Lessons are built like episodes. A problem opens the hour, the tension rises through a sequence of harder ones, and the idea resolves by the end.

We meet every student where they are. That includes siblings, who rarely start in the same place.

One lesson built two ways, for two siblings

II. who we are

The Lyceum was founded by Kevin Shustack, a McGill-trained mathematician and former children’s television writer, which is why our lessons are both rigorous and capable of holding a ten-year-old's attention.

Kevin currently teaches every lesson. As a result, enrollment is limited.

III. WHAT WE OFFER

Three programs, one standard: every lesson written for the student taking it.

  • Lyceum Lessons. Weekly instruction, individually or in a small group, with the same instructor every time. Foundations meets once a week; Core meets twice. From $300 a month.

  • Lyceum Colloquia.
