A school is shaped not only by its curriculum, but by the philosophy of those who teach within it.

Kevin Shustack is a mathematics educator, curriculum designer, and co-founder of The Lyceum, an academic learning institute based in Los Angeles. His work focuses on helping students develop deep conceptual understanding, intellectual confidence, and long-term mastery in mathematics.

Kevin holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from McGill University, where he also completed a minor in English Literature and graduated with a 3.9 GPA. His academic background reflects the dual influences that continue to shape his teaching: mathematical rigor and clear, precise communication.

Before founding The Lyceum, Kevin spent many years working as a private tutor and instructor, supporting students across middle school, high school, and advanced coursework. He also served as a Lead Instructor at Mathnasium, where he refined his approach to individualized instruction and diagnostic-driven learning. Across these experiences, he observed that students thrive when teaching emphasizes reasoning, structure, and curiosity — not memorization alone.

In parallel with his work in education, Kevin has worked professionally as a writer in television comedy and children’s animation. He is also an accomplished crossword constructor whose puzzles have appeared in publications including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Apple News+, and Universal.

These creative disciplines have shaped his approach to teaching: communicating complex ideas with clarity, designing intellectually engaging problems, and making challenging material accessible without sacrificing rigor.

The Lyceum represents the culmination of these experiences. Its programs combine diagnostic assessment, personalized curriculum design, and high-level instruction to help students develop durable mathematical understanding and independent problem-solving ability.

For Kevin, education is not simply the transmission of knowledge, but the cultivation of disciplined and independent thinkers.

Why We Founded The Lyceum

The Lyceum was founded on the belief that serious learning requires structure, discipline, and intellectual curiosity. Too often, mathematics education emphasizes procedures over understanding and speed over clarity.

Our aim is different: to help students develop genuine mastery — the ability to reason, analyze, and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence.
